Eco-friendly homes, sometimes referred to as green or sustainable homes, are residential areas built with an aim to conserve natural resources, reduce wastage, and promote a healthier living. The core philosophy of this concept is to minimise environmental impact. Here are some typical features of an eco-friendly home:

  • Energy Efficiency

An eco-friendly home typically features solar panels, smart thermostats, LED lighting, or energy-efficient appliances.

  • Sustainable Building Materials

Recycled or renewable materials like bamboo, cork, hempcrete, and low-VOC paints.

  • Water Conservation

Rainwater harvesting systems, greywater recycling and low-flow toilets.

  • Waste Reduction

Installing recycling systems within the home and usage of efficient construction techniques.

  • Indoor Environmental Quality

This includes natural lighting, ventilation, usage of plants and non-toxic materials to purify air.

  • Renewable Energy Integration

Usage of solar, wind or geothermal methods to reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

Owing to the technological advancements, environmental awareness, and economic incentives, these homes are gaining popularity across the globe. The Government of India promotes such developments through certifications like LEED and IGBC, offering subsidies and tax breaks.

As of 2024, the market for eco-friendly homes of the world is valued over $150 billion. On the other hand, India’s urban population is projected to hit 600 million thus creating high demand for them. However, they come with the burden of high installation costs. Yes, the initial investment for these mansions is higher compared to their conventional counterparts. But in the long run, they offer savings through reduced utility bills, maintenance expenses, and tax benefits.
