The building sector in India is growing at a rapid pace and contributing immensely to the growth of the economy. This augurs well for the country and now there is an imminent need to introduce green concepts and techniques in this sector, which can aid growth in a sustainable manner.
The green concepts and techniques in the building sector can help address national issues like water efficiency, energy efficiency, and reduction in fossil fuel use for commuting, handling of consumer waste and conserving natural resources. Most importantly, these concepts can enhance occupant health, productivity, and well-being.
POINTS TO BE CONSIDERED FOR A GREEN BUILDING
*Rain water harvesting. Roof and non-roof enhanc groundwater table and reduce municipal water demand through effective rain water management.
*By providing rainwater harvesting system to capture at least 25% of runoff volumes from roof and non-roof area. The harvesting system design should cater to at least 1 day of normal rainfall occurred in last 5 years.
*Design landscape to ensure minimum water consumption.
* Use energy efficient bulbs and daylight controller’s which will switch on only when natural light is in insufficient.
* IT equipment’s use lot of electricity. By setting computers in their most efficient setting and switch them off when not in use.
* Solar panels can be installed on the roof of the building as an alternative renewable energy source.
MATERIALS AND RESOURCES
*Provide separate bins to collect dry waste and wet waste.
*Encourage use of material which are recycled content to reduce environmental impacts associated with the use of virgin material.
*Encourage use of building materials available locally, thereby minimizing the associated environmental impact resulting from transportation.

*Adequate daylight, providing sufficient ventilation, windows, glazing, and skylights.
*Preferably use low VOC materials, paints, and adhesives.
*Encourage cross ventilation and provide adequate outdoor air ventilation.
